“Fred, where are you, Fred? Oh, there you are, supper won’t wait all day. Follow me on into to the kitchen.”
On the way to the kitchen ma could not help needling me about how long it had been since my last visit. I responded with “I’ve missed you too mom.” to which she smiled and sat me down. “Here’s your menu son.”
“Menu mom?”
“Nobody here can agree on what they want anymore, leased of all your pa, it’s just easier this way. I’m heading back to check the stove. You brother Robert will be out to take your order.”
“I have a brother?”
“Yes you do.”
So here I am, sitting at mom’s kitchen table with a menu in my hand. (Very strange)
Pretty soon a guy comes up with a bandage across the bridge of his nose and introduces himself. “Hey Fred, I’m your long lost brother Robert.”
“It’s Nice to meet you Robert. What happened to your nose?”
“I got so excited when ma said you were here, that I hit my nose on the range hood.”
“Ouch”
“It’s not bad. You want something to drink?”
“A Diet Coke would be great” Robert turned around and yelled “Cousin Ted run and get a Diet Coke for Fred!”
“Ok” came the soft spoken reply.
“Cousin Ted?” I asked Robert. “Well not really he’s a little slow. Just thinks he’s part of the family. What you want for supper?”
“Moms roast beef sounds awesome”
“It is. Do you want an app-e-tie-ser?”
“Sure, what would you suggest Robert?”
“One shrimp cocktail it is, and a word of warning, if you haven’t done so, go wash your hands. You never know when ma might want to check under you nails.”
“I’ll do that right now, one question first. Do you think mom would be upset if I preferred corn instead of the greens?”
“Freddie, mom would do anything for you, now go wash up.”
When I returned to the table I found Cousin Ted waiting for me.
“I know a secret”
“What’s that Ted”
“Not sure if I should say. Aunt Lou might get angry with me”
“Ok, well let’s not upset her.”
“Have you seen the Twilight Zone?”
“Yes, I’ve seen a few episodes”
“Do you remember the one with the guy who had amnesia and a bunch of people pretended to be his family and…?”
Just then Robert walked up with the shrimp and sent Ted on his way. Robert imparted some additional advice after shaking his finger at me for placing my elbows on the table. “Don’t let mom see that.”
Behind Roberts back I thought I saw Ted was whispering “He’s not really your brother”
Shortly there after, Aunt Lou came out with my roast beef platter.
“Has Ted been bothering you?” She asked with a knowing eye. Then she thumped me on the head and yelled “Sis! Fred has his elbows on the table!”
“Tell him he knows better and not to do it again!” was the reply.
Guilty, I lowered my elbows. Ted returned to refill my drink.
“They keep me in the back room at night.” He mumbled.
I was beginning to get worried about my cousin Ted.
Ted reached across the table and grabbed a view-master from the shelf.
Handing it to me he said “Go on pick a dessert, you can’t go wrong”
After looking at the pictures, I decided upon the brownie sundae.
“That’s my favorite, I’ll tell Robert”
After dessert, Robert returned with a bill for dinner.
“Mom said to keep your elbows off the table. I warned you and then Aunt Lou saw you too. Now mom says you have to pay for you supper.”
“Alright, brother Robert here you go, tell mom I will be back, and keep an eye on Ted for me I’m a little worried about him, ok?”
Thus I enjoyed a wonderful dining experience at the 50’s Prime Time Café.
You will find this little gem located at Disney’s MGM Studios.
The place is chock full of 50’s nostalgia. There are numerous dining areas and each is set up to look like a kitchen right out of this era.
Here everyone is related to you, somehow. Brother, sister, cousin, uncle, aunt, or of course good old ma.
The Shrimp cocktail consisted of four jumbo shrimp arranged on a simple white plate with a small cup of cocktail sauce.
The roast beef platter was perfect. The beef (which was fork tender) was served over mashed potatoes with gravy.
The corn was served on the side.
The brownie sundae was very rich but ohhhh sooooo good.
On a scale of 1 to 5 kernals 50’s Prime Time has earned
Stop in and visit mom on your next visit. Be sure to make a reservation well in advance. You will not be disappointed.
